What To Expect On Your Whale Watching Tour

We look forward to welcoming you aboard a brand new vessel for 2026. Our 30' (9 meter) cabin vessel was designed specifically as a comfortable all season wildlife viewing platform for 10 guests. This vessel features both Seakeeper and Zipwake active stabilization systems, reducing lateral vessel motion at rest and underway (a first for the Ucluelet fleet). We believe reducing vessel motion allows you better wildlife viewing.

Our whale watching tour grounds stretch from the waters of Barkley Sound and The Broken Group Islands all the way west up the coastline to Long Beach.  We spend the majority of our time around the islands and along the coastline as they are rich with marine life and beautiful scenery.

The whale watching season starts in late February with a few humpback whales drawn to Barkley Sound in anticipation of the herring spawn, and runs right through till October. March welcomes the arrival of the gray whale migration, bringing thousands of whales past Ucluelet on their way to Alaska. As spring rolls on, most gray whales continue north, and humpback whales arrive and become the most common sightings around Ucluelet.  These whales spend the summer busily feeding in the rich coastal waters around The Pacific Rim.  Transient Bigg's Orcas (killer whales) transit our waters on occasion throughout the season. Orcas are always a welcome sight by our guests.

There's plenty of animals living in the marine ecosystem we view on our tours. Sea otters, stellar and california sea lions,  bald eagles, deer, and porpoise are common sighting for our guests.

Scott's Wildlife & Ocean Adventures abides by the rules and guidelines surrounding safe proximity to wildlife. We are here to enjoy nature respectfully.

Everything you need to know before joining one of our wildlife adventures tours.

When is the best time for whale watching in Ucluelet?

Whale watching season starts in late February and runs through October. We see mostly Gray Whales in the late winter and early spring. Humpbacks are the predominant sightings through the summer, with transient (Bigg's) Orcas making unscheduled appearances throughout the season.

Are whale sightings guaranteed?

Our whale watching tours average an 85-90% success rate, but sightings cannot be guaranteed. We work with all local wildlife tour operators, sharing information between vessels to increase everyone's chances of success on the water.

How close do we get to the whales?

We follow strict marine wildlife regulations and observe whales from a safe and respectful distance to ensure their natural behavior is not disturbed.

Are children welcome on whale and bear watching tours?

Yes, whale watching tours are family-friendly and there are options suitable for all ages. We welcome children 3+ on our pay-per-seat tours, and children under 3 on our private tours (private tours starting under $900 per vessel and accommodate 4-10 guests). Please email or call us at (778) 350-5727 for private tour details and availability.

What should I wear on a whale watching tour?

We recommend warm, layered clothing and a waterproof jacket, as conditions on the water can be cooler and windy.
